Astha was born on the streets of Sydney on 27 January 2017 when I and my wife distributed 10 home-made dinner boxes to homeless people. We walked from Martin place to Central station for 2.5 hours to distribute 10 dinner boxes of veg curry with rice. Keeping the tiredness aside, the satisfaction of feeding needy was bringing smiles on our faces. That motivated us to continue our journey for another 3 Fridays. Our main focus was to feed people staying in tents around the central station.

Astha currently holds a free food service on a fortnightly basis under central station at 470 Pitt Street, Sydney. Our objective is to provide relief such as food, water, clothing, blankets and daily essentials to homeless people living on the street or otherwise whoever is in need. Astha’s team started only by distributing food to 10 homeless and hungry people. Astha has now progressed to serve more than 120 homeless people.

While food service always remained our top priority, we would often notice the need for clean clothing and hygiene amongst homeless people, especially when sleeping rough in the city and surrounding areas during winter. We cannot imagine a day in winter without warm clothes or blanket to get our sound sleep and to see these homeless people without a blanket or warm clothing was heartwrenching.
